Title

Baptism of Sylvester, 1819

Subject

Slaves, Sacraments; Catholic Church-Slavery

Description

Baptismal record for Sylvester, the son of Joe and Easter, slaves of Newtown, dated June 4, 1819. Joe and Easter (or Esther) Greenleaf and their children, including Sylvester, were sold to Henry Johnson in 1838. Their names appear on the list of births at Newtown, the Articles of Agreement and bills of sale, the manifest of the Katherine Jackson, and subsequent documents from Louisiana.

This record is from a sacramental register for Newtown in the Maryland Province Archives in Special Collections at Georgetown University. The register is fragile and the binding has come apart. Special Collections is preserving and digitizing this valuable document, and we will make a digitized version available online as soon as possible.
