Description

An ArcGIS StoryMap of the West Oak Plantation in Iberville Parish, Louisiana. Dozens of members of the Maryland Jesuit enslaved community were sold by the Maryland Jesuits to Jesse Batey, the original owner of West Oak, and many ended up living at this plantation, which is in the vicinity of Maringouin, Louisiana today.

This StoryMap was developed by Georgetown student Sara Phillips (GU '22). Georgetown students are using new digital storytelling tools to help interpret materials from the Georgetown Slavery Archive and understand the historical connections between Georgetown, the Jesuits, and slavery.
