Know all men by these presents that I Jane E Smith of Saint Mary's County and State of Maryland for and in consideration of the sum of four hundred dollars, current money to be to me paid by the Revd. Mr. Woodley of the County & State aforesaid, the receipt whereof I do herewith acknowledge, have granted, bargained sold and delivered unto the said Revd. Mr. Woodley (agent for the Jesuit Society at Newtown) my negro man "Len" (Slave). I will warrant and defend to the said Revd. Mr. Woodley his successors and assigners against me my executors administrators and assigns, & against any other person whosoever. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my and and offered my seale this 4th day of September, Eighteen hundred and Forty-Three.
