Description

This list of expenses of the Maryland Province, probably compiled in the early 20th century by Jesuit historian Joseph Zwinge, S.J., shows how the Jesuits distributed some of the funds collected from the sale of 272 persons in 1838.

The most significant expenses for that year were a $22,776 loan to Georgetown College from the proceeds of that sale and $8,000 given to the Archdiocese of Baltimore to settle a conflict between the Jesuits and the Archbishop of Baltimore.

An expense of $144.06 is also recorded for the transportation of "slaves" from White Marsh and St. Inigoes to Alexandria, presumably to be shipped from there to Louisiana.
