Description
An account of the resource
In these three meetings held at Georgetown College on May and September of 1813, and June of 1814 the members of the Corporation of Roman Catholic Clergymen discussed and resolved to "dispose for a limited time of the greatest parts of the blacks on the different plantations."

The discussion, which spanned over a year, allowed the majority of the managers to give their opinions on the matter. The majority of them agreed to sell their enslaved communities for a term of years before the meeting of September, 1814. However the discussion was moved until June of next year, when they would reach a final resolution. In the meantime, the Corporation granted permission to Archbishop Carroll to sell an enslaved woman and child from the Bohemia Plantation.

Under their final agreement reached in June, 1814, managers of the plantations would select the individuals to be sold, they would not "offer too many for sale at one time," and the sales would be for "a term of years. The profits raised from these transactions would benefit the estates from which the enslaved people were sold. However, the group insisted that their decision was not obligatory nor would they force managers to sell all of the enslaved community of the plantations, as "some may be reserved for domestic and necessary uses."

The clergymen who resolved and drafted this plan in 1814 were Archbishop John Carroll, Bishop Leonard Neale, and Robert Plunkett, S.J.

The decision to sell the enslaved community was repealed in 1820.

At a meeting held at Georgetown College in 1813, the members of the Corporation of Roman Catholic Clergy decided to sell two "black servants" to the Rev. Bitouzey, a member of the secular clergy, who was in charge of White Marsh until his resignation on October 26, 1813. This resolution also approved the sale of an unspecified number of enslaved women from White Marsh.
This sale of enslaved persons appears to have been a settlement between the Rev. Bitouzey and the partially restored Society of Jesus.

Description
An account of the resource
In 1804, the Rev. John Ashton asked the Corporation of Roman Catholic Clergy to pay his legal fees from suits "carried on by him whilst he was manager of the estate of the White Marsh." The Corporation decided to pay for these fees, with the exception of "those suits concerning some slaves by the name of Mahoney."

Charles, Daniel, and Patrick Mahoney sued John Ashton for their freedom while he was in charge of the Jesuit plantation of White Marsh. These cases are detailed by the O Say Can You See: Early Washington, D.C., Law and Family project.

Description
An account of the resource
In 1867, officials in Maryland undertook a census of all the people in Maryland who were emancipated in the state in 1864. The census was prepared in the hope that the ex-slaveowners would be compensated for the loss of their human property, as slaveowners in Washington, D.C. had been. The census for St. Mary's County, Maryland, lists a family owned by "Rev. I.B. Meucer" of the Corporation of Roman Catholic Clergymen of Maryland. (This was probably John B. Meurer, S.J.) The family included Louise Mason (age 45), and her children Daniel, Ann, Charity, Thomas, Josephine, and Robert Mason. A 27-year old man named William Holly is also listed.
Louise Mason and her family were the last people currently known to have been enslaved by the Maryland Jesuits.
