Title

"Jeremiah Bronaugh on account of servant men now in the Dormitory," 1843

Subject

Slave Hiring; Georgetown College

Description

This account for Jeremiah Bronaugh shows the hiring of multiple enslaved men beginning in 1843 to the college. James and Buck, whose full name appears to be William Johnson, were hired from Bronaugh for $7 per month. A notation records that Buck left the college in early November 1843. Another man named Davy Johnson joins James in 1845. The full account includes charges for mending, shoes, as well as boots given as gifts and wages.

James may be James H. Young who later worked off the price of freedom papers for himself and his mother at the college. See GSA105.
